Is your firm ready for AI?

Twelve yes/partly/no questions on policy, client data, review and training. You get a score and the first five things to fix. Nothing is stored or sent unless you choose to email me your result.

General information, not legal advice. This is a self-check, not a compliance audit. Have your counsel review the rules that apply to your profession.

1. Does your firm have a written AI use policy that staff have actually seen?

Most firms have people using AI with no written rule. An unwritten rule is just a habit.

2. Is there a short, named list of AI tools staff may use for client work (business-grade plans, not free accounts)?

Free and personal accounts often have weaker data terms and no admin control.

3. Is using free or personal AI accounts for client work prohibited?

A single lawyer, advisor or preparer pasting a client's facts into a free chatbot is the common failure.

4. Do staff know what must never go into an AI tool (client names, SSNs, account numbers, privileged or return information)?

People need examples, not just a principle.

5. Has someone read each AI vendor's data terms (training on your data, retention, deletion, storage location)?

'Enterprise' or 'secure' on a marketing page means little until you read the terms.

6. Does a person check every AI-assisted fact, number, citation and client message before it leaves the firm?

AI makes confident mistakes. Review is what keeps them from reaching a client.

7. Do staff know whom to tell, right away and without blame, if something sensitive goes into the wrong tool?

People hide mistakes when they fear blame, and that turns small problems into big ones.

8. Has your team had any AI training in the last 12 months?

Policy without training is shelfware.

9. Does one named person own AI decisions for the firm (tools, policy, reviews)?

Shared ownership usually means no ownership.

10. Have you checked whether client agreements, outside-counsel guidelines or your insurance policies say anything about AI?

Some clients and carriers already restrict or ask about AI use.

11. Do you have a ranked list of the tasks where AI would save your team the most time?

Without a list, tools get bought first and use cases second.

12. Have you tried an AI tool on a real firm workflow and measured the result?

A small measured pilot beats a big plan.
